Nurturing Disabled Talent
workshop: what to expect
Being disabled can mean that you view, think and approach things differently to non-disabled people, in the world of PR and communication that’s a much-needed skill. But in order to let those strengths shine, non-disabled people must identify and remove systemic barriers, challenge the standard way of working and broaden their horizons of possibility.
In the On Point training workshop Nurturing Disabled Talent, I’ll take participants through these barriers – what they look like, how to dismantle them and how to start building better employment journeys for employees with disabilities or impairments. Beyond actionable tips this session is about pushing the understanding of disability and examining the cookie cutter way in which we operate in both the workplace and society.
Is it radical? In parts. Is it necessary? Absolutely. Have I given attendees a little something extra with a pre-session video? Also, yes. The reason is that we know very little about the reality of being disabled and working in PR. There is almost no data, case studies are hard to come by and many of us aren’t quite sure what the actual barriers are.
“this session will give participants the insight and tools to make lasting positive changes“
Some of the areas I’ll cover include managing disclosure of disability, throwing away the script on diversity statements, cultural accessibility, and challenging the approach to promotion and seniority. And for those who prefer a bit more practicality to their training I’ve included a workshop element too. Some of the elements I’ve included will pose more questions than answers, but we PR folks do like problem solving, and considering things from a different perspective is central to any good diversity and inclusion strategy.
In two hours, this session will give attendees the insight and tools to make lasting positive changes which will benefit everyone. Those who attend will, I hope, be compelled to think beyond accommodations and consider how embedded systems can be reimagined to not only welcome, but nurture and support those with disabilities to thrive in all organisations.
